The Priests Wife: Hardly amusing blend of drama and humor with Loren as a disenchanted singer who imagines she could persuade pastor Mastroianni to acquire discharge from his promise of celibacy and wed her. Mrs. Doubtfire: Warm and gratifying comedy with earnest overtones in reference to a free spirit whose spouse divorces him after fourteen years. He couldn’t bear being split apart from his 3 kids, so he camouflages himself as a dowdy British housekeeper (under an Oscar quality makeup job) and gets himself employed to look after them. Williams is in top form, and director Columbus keeps the tale and characters moderately practical in an effort to drive home a humanistic message.
