Have you ever sent out an “advertisement,” and much to your disappointment, received much less of a response than you had hoped for?

Perhaps a little crash course in marketing psychology is in order.

Sometimes advertisements simply don’t work because of tiny, unknown subtleties of psychology

What is “marketing,” anyway? Here’s a neat way to think about it…

Marketing is simply influencing peoples thoughts in a direction of a product or service

That might sound a little bit harsh, but here’s what I mean.

When you write an advertisement, a web page, an email, or a sales letter, the real reason you are choosing the words you’re choosing is because you want to influence your reader’s state of mind.

As a target, you are looking to get the person to say - I want that… OR I need to buy that now..

Whenever you write those words, you are doing so with the purpose of getting that person to think something and act on it.

When your advertising is more ‘Miss’ Than ‘Hit’, you know you have a problem

+++++++++++++You are not achieving the state of mind influence and getting the message to ‘Hit Home’ for the reader. You are not hitting the ‘Hot Buttons’.++++++++++++++++++++++

So… Why is that do you think?

You thought you had crafted the advertisement with skill and patience, and read other ads in the same genre to get the tone…

However, at the end when you are ‘counting the money’, the results are not where they need to be

So, that being said - how do we get inside the readers minds?

Understanding basic human needs and wants (psychology) is the key…. When you know the buttons to push, you can start to influence people in the way you need to.

Of course, psychology is a profession with multiple years of study and hard work…. But you can pick up a few tips and tricks to start gaining the results.

Some of this may go ‘against the grain’ for you…. But to stand out from the crowd - sometimes that is what is needed.

Because as we know - the methods that have been comfortable and feel like they are the right way… May not have achieved the results. Right?

Most people will tune out when they see something that is an ad.

When you look at the way your think personally, you will see evidence of this.

Is reading advertisements something you would jump at in your spare time?

I wouldn’t think that Ads would be a popular choice in your free time…

An advertisement is usually classified as something whose sole purpose is to sell something.

So giving some real, and beneficial information is the best way around that. And give it free!`

When you give something of value away for free, you are not seen as trying to sell something. You are therefore avoiding the filter of ‘Just another advertisement’

People will be assured from your first offering of valuable information, and then when you are looking to post in you offer with them, you have a much higher chance of getting that offer seen.

Try it.

When your ad looks like everyone elses, you are dead. You may as well not advertise at all.

It’s a shame — we see so many people nowadays advertising their sites in the *exact* same way.

LIKE THIS: THIS IS THE LATEST, GREATEST, MOST IMPORTANT EMAIL OF A BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY YOU WILL EVER SEE. HURRY!!! ETC ETC…

Nobody pays attention to things like this anymore.

Make sure you don’t look like anyone else, and you’ll stand out.

You MUST be original and stand out from the others if you want to succeed

Combine this with Tip #1 to come up with headlines and email subject lines which really communicate something interesting and meaningful.

Remember, you can bait people in to read your ad with headlines and subject lines which convey something people actually want to read, and then later you can still sell them your product or service!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ TIP #3: At all costs, avoid making huge promises you know you can’t keep. Don’t hype. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

The incredible claims that are being made in marketing these days are sickening. Subjects just join here for free, do no work - and within 24 hours, you will be rolling in cash.

You can’t honestly expect someone to fulfill those promises, they have no substance whatsoever.

People stop reading the ads at this point - as the alarm bell has been rung.

People also become immune to your ads, if you promote something as the ‘Biggest’ or the ‘Best’. They have heard it all before

Of course, if Google make the claim of being the Biggest or The best… They have something to stand on, but all the other hype just turns people off.

You might even believe that it is the best thing you have seen in ten years - but people tune out and this promise just washes over the reader (see Tip #2).

This one can seem counterintuitive, since you might think that you *should* say great things about your website or product to get people to want it.

The problem is… This is not taking the Psychology into account.

Instead, the real skill in advertising is getting people’s attention and giving real information to keep that attention, looking different from others and bringing people to you in a subtle way.

Let your actual website or product make them say “wow.”

But - Are you over hyping your marketing, promising the world and saying anything to get people in, because the site itself is not going to deliver the type of punch you are looking for? Then you need to revise and re-evaluate and ensure that the product or service you are delivering can put that “wow” factor in.
