Though it is sometimes overshadowed by more famous tracks back East like Churchill downs and Belmont Park, Del Mar Racetrack in Southern California has a rich and fascinating history. Located 20 miles north of San Diego and known for its iconic slogan “Where The Surf Meets the Turf”, Del Mar has not only hosted the best horses and jockeys on the planet but a ‘who’s who’ of show biz elite.

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club was founded by a group of well heeled enthusiasts in the mid 1930s, and they immediately turned their attention to building a world class horse racing venue. The names that were instrumental in the creation of Del Mar include a whos who of American entertainment–most notably Bing Crosby, Oliver Hardy (of Laurel and Hardy) and Jimmy Durante. At the time the facility opened thoroughbred horse racing was the second most popular sport in America behind major league baseball, and Del Mar quickly gained a reputation for being a player in the industry.

The starpower drawn to the course was unprecedented. Bing Crosby himself greeted patrons at the gate on opening day, and during the late 1930s and early 1940s it became a place to be seen for Hollywood A-listers and those who aspired for celebrity. In addition to known gambling enthusiasts like W.C. Fields, Edgar Bergen and Red Skelton, the Del Mar patrons during that time also included some of the top female stars of the era including Ava Gardner, Paulette Goddard and Dorothy Lamour

Del Mar was the site of the 1938 match race between Seabiscuit and Ligaroti. Seabiscut won the $25,000 winner take all challenge by a nose, and this race set Del Mar betting and attendance records and remains one of the most famous races in history. The racing at Del Mar continued to flourish until the start of WWII, when the track went ‘dark’ for racing. It was used at times by the military for, among other things, a training ground for Marines and later a production facility for bomber parts.

After the war, Del Mar reopened with a bang. Following the surrender of Japan, President Harry S. Truman declared a national holiday for August 15, 1945 and on that day Del Mar attracted over 20,000 fans through its gates who wagered what at the time was a record $958,476. The postwar prosperity was also a boon to Del Mar, which also benefitted from the Santa Fe Railroads daily Racetrack Special that brought bettors down from Los Angeles to enjoy a day at the track. During the latter part of the decade a new crop of Hollywood glitterati would flock to Del Mar, including Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Mickey Rooney and Jimmy Durante. Durante would become such a regular that the turf course at Del Mar would later be renamed in his honor.

The annual race meet at Del Mar remains a highlight of the summer to this day. Del Mar remains one of the top tracks in the country, and have recently upgraded their facility with a state of the art grandstand and was one of the first tracks to install a new synthetic racing surface.

Vikings Great Fran Tarkenton Calls Favre Signing ‘A Circus’

While everyone within the organization of the NFLs Minnesota Vikings is putting on a grin and bear it face and trying to maintain the party line that theres much rejoicing over Brett Favre being their QB this season, one former Viking great isnt playing that game. NFL Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton, who has been critical of Favres act for awhile now, has described the whole scene surrounding his signing by the Vikings as a circus.

Tarkenton started his rant by suggesting that The Gunslinger had forever tarnished his legacy:

“I really have no interest in what Brett Favre does. He kind of lost me a few years ago by retiring and unretiring and here and there. I asked a few friends here, maybe 10 or 12 people we were out with last night. I said, ‘What do you think about Brett Favre going back to the Vikings?’ You know who cared? Nobody. It’s good news for you guys. It’s good news for television and so forth but the last time I heard … football was a team sport, isn’t it? It’s not just about the quarterback.”

He later continued his criticism on ESPN:

“We have responsibilities we’re just not athletes that are in it all for ourself, football, is it not a team game? Isn’t it all about team … and here comes Brett Favre riding in on his white horse, doesn’t go to training camp, doesn’t come to offseason workouts and he’s gonna come on his white horse and bond with all these players.”

Tarkenton continued his criticism on a local radio station:

“I think he has been a great flamboyant quarterback, but he has made more stupid plays than any great quarterback that I’ve ever seen. Look at his final game in a Packers uniform. He blew that game NFC championship against the Giants.

“I really think the whole Brett Favre saga of retiring, unretiring, three weeks ago saying ‘I can’t play,’ the Vikings said, ‘We’re moving on,’ it’s a circus. It’s an absolute circus, and it takes away from all the other things that are going on with the Vikings, with the NFL. We’re getting ready for a football season and this is a circus and I just have no interest in it.

“Wouldn’t you be upset if you’re a Packer fan? I think you’re going to have Packer fans burning the No. 4 Favre Green Bay jersey. I think the Packer fans have every right to be outraged.”

ESPN, in particular has turned on Favre, fomenting this sort of criticism after being the biggest perpetrator of the interminable will he retire or wont he talk starting last season. Now that theyve turned their attention toward portraying Michael Vick as a victim rather than a sociopath, they appear to be willing to throw Favre under the bus.

The Basketball Race For LeBron Gets Interesting

Rumblings have come about this week that make it look more possible that LeBron James will sign with the Knicks following this year.

When LeBron becomes a free agent in the end of the 2010 season, the Cavs will remain in the top position to re-sign him. This is a product of the Larry Bird rule, which lets a team to exceed the salary cap in order to retain their own free negotiator.

The Knicks will offer LeBron a huge contract, however they won’t have the ability to offer LeBron as a lot as the Cavaliers. So they got inventive in the big city and found a way to circumvent that blasted salary cap.

The chitchat is that the Knicks will not only give LeBron a max contract, but additionally his very own cable television network. You see, the Knicks are owned by Cablevision, a cable TV company.

LeBron might earn income from the advertisers on his cable channel. As per basketball regulations, the team would not be allowed to set up these advertisements/advertisers for LeBron; he would be required to handle that on his own. Although I think we might all concur that James possesses enough connections in the commercial sphere to cause that to take place.

The word is that the channel might broadcast replays of Knicks games (where the rights are owned by Cablevision), as well as other programming about James, the Knicks, as well as the NBA. Some are even predicting that Nike might seek to be drawn in and produce their own TV show.

The big issue is whether the league might allow this. It seems to be fully within league regulations. The cable channel would be seen as a tangential benefit of playing in NY, similar to a range of other marketing benefits that come from playing in a certain city. The income might be seen as non-basketball associated income.

This is a newborn and attention-grabbing twist in the LeBron-to-be-a-free agent chronicle. The general consensus is that Cleveland is winning the stakes. Maybe that is starting to change?

Deciding on a tattoo is important. Tattoos are permanent and will make a statement about you for the rest of your life. Some people decide to get tattoos in remembrance of a lost loved one, some wish to commemorate an important event in their lives. Others simply want to make a very personal statement about themselves.

It may not be easy to choose exactly the right tattoo design. The person you are today may not be the same as the person you will become. Choosing the theme of the tattoo is the first step. Then you must choose a design. There are hundreds of designs available at tattoo shops and online.

No matter what theme you choose, the will be lots of designs available. Thinking about your personal style will help you chose the right design.

Start by looking at designs online in the many tattoo galleries. Many artists have their own websites to showcase their unique designs. thin about the style that best represents you. The are tribal designs, Asian designs and representations of fine art. Take your time and look at as many designs as possible before you make your choice. You don’t want to get your tattoo and then see a design you like better. Look for the image that is perfect for you.

Visit local tattoo artists and ask to see their portfolios. These are photos that show their past work. Looking at a portfolio will tell you not only about the artists designs, but about his skill in recreating those designs. A great design that’s poorly done won’t make the statement you want. Make sure the shop is licensed and uses proper sterile protocol. An infection will ruin the best tattoo and leave you with a scar. Each artist has a different style and technique and this will influence the way he executes your design. Make sure you feel confident in your artist’s skills before proceeding with your tattoo.

If you aren’t sure where you want your tattoo, look around at where others have tattoos. Consider your workplace. It may not be practical for you to have a tattoo that can’t be covered by your clothing. Although tattoos are becoming more popular, many people have negative associations with tattoos and the people who wear them. Consider putting your tattoo on your shoulder or back where it won’t show when you’re dressed for work.

If you find the perfect design, but it isn’t tattoo art, take the picture to your local tattoo artist. He may be able to create a drawing of how the design might look if it were made into a tattoo. There are some restrictions on the way a photo or piece of art can be rendered in a tattoo. Skin isn’t the same as canvass, and needles aren’t the same as brushes. If you like the way your design looks as a tattoo you can have it put on your skin.

Having a tattoo is very cool, especially if it is something that really symbolizes you or your belief. Just search for a tattoo design in the places discussed above and you can be sure that you will get the perfect tattoo for yourself.

Don’t You (Forget About Me) - New Found Glory’s Good Cover Song

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

New Found Glory’s cover album From the Screen to Your Stereo Part II included a version of the 1980’s hit song Don’t You (Forget About Me). The song, which was made theme of the movie The Breakfast Club, was originally recorded by the new wave band Simple Minds.

The song was written by Ketih Forsey and Steve Schiff. You’d be surprised to know that this classic theme song almost did not make it to the radio because two of the original artists intended to record it (Bryan Ferry and Billy Idol) refused. Then the writers pitched it to Simple Minds who also refused to do the song. It was only after the band’s record label persuasion that Simple Minds finally decided to accept.

It turned out to be a wise decision for the band. When the movie The Breakfast Club, which featured the song, was shown in theaters, it became a major hit. The song became the band’s only number one hit in the United States. It was also their most famous song to date.

The song’s history and haunting effect makes it the perfect cover for a pop-punk band. It would be a great irony to have a band who’s used to shouting songs take on a serene, slow-paced up to the point of being haunting song from the 80s.

New Found Glory’s version is very much different than the original. It did not have the eerie feel of the original’s vocals. It is more hip, youthful, and, obviously, loud. It’s not unexpected to hear a louder version of this song since a pop-punk band is meant to sing something loud. The vocals, though, are not impressive since there was more shouting. However, the words were loud and clear.

It was a good thing that the band did not change the son’s original melody. Had they done that, I guess there would be a different result. People may not relate to it well and may even not recognize the song. It was right that they kept the original score and just upped the tempo and made it louder. It works better that way for the band.

In truth, nothing is achieved in recording another version of the song. You can’t really see anything new with the new version aside from it being upbeat and more current. There was not much to expect, only loud shouting and growling (which was very audible at the bridge). However, the growl at the latter part of the song was executed nicely, It didn’t sound awkward or forced. It felt natural, making the song sound more like a New Found Glory hit.

Though I don’t dislike the song, I’m not shouting praises and raves either. You’d think that because of the fun vibe in the song, it was done out of pure fun, which is something a band should really be all about to come up with an effective song whether it’s an original or just a cover.
