If you are reading this article, you may be aware that it is possible to ‘chat’ to other users on Facebook. To find out how to connect with other users on Facebook though its instant messaging service, read on…

1. Find online friends

You should be able to find the Facebook Chat service on your Facebook account - it is already sat waiting for you to use it at the bottom of your Facebook dashboard on the right - there is nothing that you need to install or download in order to use it.

Online friends are shown in a list and are indicated with a green circle by their account names. Those with a moon-shaped symbol next to their names have been online recently but inactive for over ten minutes, so they are unlikely to respond if you initiate a chat with them.

2. Get chatting

Simply click on a friend’s name in the list of online friends in order to start a chat conversation with them. Any message that you type in the chat box can be read by them as soon as you have hit return - they can then reply to you.

3. Adjusting the sound alerts

When friends type messages to you on Facebook chat, you might discover that whenever a new message is sent to you, a sound is played on your computer. If you do not like this function then you can adjust this setting by going to ‘Options’ and ensuring that the box, ‘play sound for new messages’ is unchecked.

4. Arranging the friend list

Some people find that they have so many friends online on Facebook chat that they cannot see them all without scrolling down. If you want to be able to see all of your online friends in one go then you could check, ’show names only in online friends’ - this will remove their profile pictures from the list, freeing up space.

5. Going offline

If you want to leave Facebook Chat, go to ‘Options’ and click on ‘Go Offline’. This will shut down the Facebook chat box so that you cannot see who is online and no one will be able to see that you are on Facebook.

Using Facebook chat is a great way to instant message your friends who are on Facebook. The different settings ensure that you can have a great instant messaging experience as you can adjust them to suit your needs.
