Memory foam mattresses used to be a lot more expensive until recent days where many manufacturers are making them now. On one hand its good that there’s a big selection, but on the other hand, there are more low quality memory foam mattresses on the market than ever. Generally, you want to avoid the cheaper mattresses because of the materials used in them. The foam is cheaper and less dense. It is then layered and combined with other low quality materials. The result is a mattress that may not last you a long time. When you’re shopping for memory foam mattresses, you’ll notice that there are two types that you can buy. You can buy the whole memory foam mattress or you can opt for a mattress topper which is just layer of foam over top your existing mattress. With a whole mattress, you want to be aware of two factors: comfort and durability. With a memory foam mattress topper, however, the comfort aspect is more important because when it wears out, it can easily be replaced. It will usually last 4 to 5 years at a 4 lb density rating. You want to make sure it is comfortable because you’re not buying the whole mattress. When you buy a memory foam mattress or pad, you have to be aware of the density of the memory foam. No matter what the sales person says, here’s what you have to keep in mind. It costs more to make denser foam simply because of the materials going into it but denser foam does not necessarily mean more comfort. All memory foam density means is how much it weighs. A 5 lb density memory foam mattress simply means that each cubic foot of material would weight 5 pounds. One cube is measuring length, one foot in height and one foot in width. Furthermore, denser foams tend to have more of that unique memory foam mattress feeling. The feeling of it conforming to your body and giving way to your weight. The less dense foams don’t have enough thickness and support to provide this feeling. So when you are looking to buy a memory foam mattress, the ideal density is really 4 pounds for mattress topper pads and 3.2 to 3.4 pounds for less dense foams.
