Many have done it - been influenced by the enthusiasm of others and decided to join an MLM opportunity, only to find pain and anguish down the line. They drag names and contacts out of their address books and after some weeks there is no one left around who will speak to them.

Some time after, we might find that we have exhausted the contents of our address books and though some had joined, most had not and eventually the whole thing just dwindled to a distant memory. Meanwhile we get on with our real job and move on.

The main lesson I took from this myself, was that MLM does not work. After a period of time my friends came back and things were forgotten.

This a story that will be familiar to many people, given that 96% of all MLM newbies have this type of disappointing experience.

Then, I became involved in a standard non MLM business and after some time of trying this - I had some success and though not metioric, I did learn some things. The most valuable lesson was, my perspective had changed. When I got a second opportunity to try MLM again, this time I found myself willing and able to think outside of the box and it is this that made the difference.

I studied MLM and those that had been successful and those that had not and the results that I found were quite remarkable, to me at least.

I asked myself, what is the difference in approach to the way most people who enter MLM attack their business compared with the way a successful business person in a non MLM business attacks theirs.

I realised that a true business person approaches a business from a certain angle. They fully research their market, they invest in obtaining the correct information and then they invest further in marketing, staffing, premises etc and they pay for accountants, solicitors or lawyers and bookkeepers. One of the key areas here is marketing - or ‘how are they going to get a decent level of customers’.

Next I looked at MLM newbies - these people are usually ex or existing employees who have no knowledge or understanding about how a business should be run and so they invest in the wrong things. Some buy tons of product believing that their business is about selling as much of it as possible.

The next point I found is about the product or service itself. MLM newbies tend to concentrate on this area when this is the least area of concern in an MLM business. I can catagorically declare here that the actual business opportunity itself is of no real importance in the early stages. Of course you will need to know about your product or service to be able to sell it but this is not the most vital of skills to master - if it is so good then it will largely sell itself will it not?

This was now getting exciting - I started to feel that I was onto something after all of this studying and that I was about to lift the lid on what the key components were to running a successful MLM business.

So, here is the MLM newbie, he has worked hard by contacting all of those people they know - some have joined and others are hiding behind the couch (sound familiar ?). This persons downline is stuffed with people who have done the same and whilst this will generate a small income, it does not generate enough to even remain qualified as an agent yourself.

Therefore, urgent action is needed - and this is usually where the purchasing of leads is the next step. This increases the money out and does give some activity but after some hard work trying to get people in, a typical positive response rate is around 2%. I truth, these new people are no different than those in the Family and Friends that were initially recruited and several months down the line, it is realised that the money spent on the marketing effort has not been replaced and you realize that this is not the way to become financially successful.

I discovered that the top 1%, the successful MLM business people do things differently. They invest in their new business by finding out where there prospects are and making these prospects come to them. They attract them using bait which is sure to work because it is in the language that the prospective MLM people speak.

So, I invested a small amount of in money finding out precisely how I could do what the top people were doing. I downloaded books, articles and watched videos and DVDs and then I hit on it - I found a resource which was so effective and so reasonably priced that I had to have a go and this is what I did.

After considerable reading and watching, I realised that the way to approach MLM was to recruit other good MLM people who were facing the dilemma “how can I get really good people into my downline”. These people were who I wanted in my own downline. But they already had their own MLM opportunity that they were promoting so how was I going to do this?

Thank goodness that I had accidentally stumbled upon a great information resource which was low cost and which contained the guidance that I was seeking. It became clear to me that leadership and direction was what I needed to offer to me team if I was going to copy the great MLM entrepreneurs. I begin to understand that the only way to get these existing MLM people to follow me was to lay down a clear path which would help them succeed themselves. I would stop being the Hunter and become the Hunted.

In a nutshell that is it - I was going to build a business where people sought me out and followed me not because of the MLM opportunity that I was working on at any one time, but because of who I was and how I would train them to do the same. As I had taken my lessons from one of the most successful MLM business people of all time, I was in good company and I was clear on how to follow in his footsteps.

I have now started to build a strong MLM team with my new MLM opportunity. The product or service itself is of secondary concern to me - but I now get contacts regularly and the frequency is slowly increasing. I am simply not too bothered if someone decides not to join me - if they are not 100% committed to becoming rich doing this, then I do not want them to join me anyway. So these people are vetted by me before I allow them into my team.

If you show to your own downline direction and leadership, they will follow you and others will be attracted to your downline - would you not join someone who had the answers to the question “where am I going to get top performing people from?”

Have you ever belonged to a MLM program I’m sure you know the old school marketing techniques where you work your warm list (family and friends), make lists of everyone you know, leave drop cards everywhere, cold call people on a purchased list of leads, hold hotel meetings, leave flyers on every bulletin board you can find, approach everyone within 3 feet, etc, etc.

Did you get a warm welcoming reception to these techniques? Did they work for you? Sell a lot of products? Get a bunch of new recruits? No? Well don’t feel alone, they don’t work for most other people either. That’s why most people don’t succeed in the industry.

My company indicated that everyone was a potential prospect. While not everyone might be directly interested in the products we sold, everyone was interested in earning some extra money, right? So just make a presentation to everyone you met and some would say yes. I was told that it was a numbers game, the more you people you told about your opportunity, the more people you would get to sign up.

But that’s not what happened. People soon would avoid conversation at all cost, not answer their phones nor return messages, and would go out of their way to avoid getting within conversation distance. In other words, I had inadvertently become a member of the NFL (No Friends Left) club.

So what is the typical industry response to NFL (No Friends Left) club members? Buy opportunity leads and start calling them. And so I did.

But by following this guidance led only to more rejection, hung up phones, and some hostile confrontations from these supposedly opportunity seeking prospects.

After running out of money and sinking into debt from purchasing useless leads I had nothing to show for it.

I gave up for a while feeling that Network Marketing just would not work for me. But then I discovered a easier and better way. A way that in not taught by most MLM companies because it is not the “traditional way they have always done it.”

Using attraction marketing techniques, I soon learned the secrets of offering desirable and useful information to a targeted audience, build a relationship with them and get them to come to me asking to join my team.
