If you’re a Serious Entrepreneur who’s been involved in Internet Marketing for any length of time, you’re learning that using social media is a great way to promote your business for free. If you don’t know what you’re trying to do, however, then most likely you are doing it wrong. You might have pissed off Google and other people who had thought that you were their online “buddy”. You might even have your accounts on Myspace, Facebook and Twitter canceled. You are now branded as a SPAMMER! Online social networks are great, especially for our rapidly advancing technological world. People can use them to stay in touch with loved ones who are away or out of the country, meet new people who have the same interests online, make friends, spend time chatting, and much more. Unfortunately, as of all good things on the Internet, some evil monster figured out how to twist these blessings and use them for evil. ![]() For example, a blog (for bloggers) is Web 2.0, both Myspace and Facebook are Web 2.0, Flickr and Twitter are also categorized as Web 2.0, and all social bookmarking websites are Web 2.0. As online marketing evolved, online businessmen found out that they were able to promote their stuff using all these for free. It’s like, “For Free? Cool!” Problem is that it’s not cool! Social media a broad word that encompasses many kinds of sites but there’s an online etiquette that dictates which web 2.0 sites allow you to have a slice of the Internet property for yourself and your business - without ticking off the wrong people and causing you to lose your reputation as a serious entrepreneur in the network marketing industry. To place it into an analogy: It’s your day off from a long work week, the perfect time to relax and communicate with friends and maybe even meet new ones. So, you party and have a blast. But then someone comes out of the blue, tells him who he is and then instantly tries to sell you things that he’s got in store. Oh come on! It wouldn’t be surprising if you suddenly hurl your drink at his face - at the very least. This is pretty much what happens when you use social media sites in ways that they’re not supposed to be used. If you’re going to succeed in the Internet jungle of business, you have to understand that it’s not about making money, but rather, about making connections with people. Even if it’s on the Internet, you should conduct business the same way you would in person: With dignity and respect. Business has it’s time and place, and social media is generally not one of them. Not a single person likes things forced down his throat. Respect is essential when building long lasting relationships, and it takes lots of time. Like a fairy tale, almost every successful entrepreneur has their very own “Cinderella” story, or, more known as a “rags-to-riches” story: from busing tables in restaurants to becoming millionaires by their 20’sfrom living in a dump calling itself a flat, to owning many homes, one for every day of the week. But you should wait and listen to the “down and dirty side” of these stories, before you become so inspired by them. This way, you’ll be able to know just how much these people really sacrificed and endured to get their fortunes. Take into consideration Mike Michalowicz’s approach and try asking yourself this, “A ‘Toilet Paper Entrepreneur’, is that me?” His analogy for true entrepreneurialism is a typical bathroom experience: “Business” is done, and you discover only 3 sheets of toilet paper left on the roll. As they say, necessity breeds invention, and you’re racking your brains to find a solution to this dilemma. ![]() They take action, dig around in the nearby garbage, check out whatever is handy within arm’s reach, use the empty cardboard roll if necessary, call it goodand move on! Serious Entrepreneurs will never sit around, whining excuses. Nor do they have patience for those who do so. Words you’ll never hear from a Serious Entrepreneur: “I’m broke right now.” “I am not that smart.” “I don’t have the time. I’m too busy.” “It’ll take too long to build a business, let alone a successful one.” “There’s too much risk involved. I’m too scared.” “I’m too old.” Serious entrepreneurs don’t just sit and dream about when their big break would come, but they get off their butts and make it happen. They don’t sit on their money, waiting for it to grow on their own. They’ll go out and make their own moneymaking ventures, whether it’s selling lemonade by the street, or setting microchips in Silicone Valley. By the way, millionaires are a frugal (as opposed to cheap) bunch: Warren Buffett, the third richest person in the world, according to Forbes, lives in the same Omaha, Nebraska, home he bought four decades ago for $31,500. Successful Entrepreneurs do not multi-task. They’re like bulldogs: they’ll latch on to one thing until it’s good and done proper. They aren’t perfectioniststhey say, “Good is good enough.” Because they know that money likes speed. They have this thinking that by the time the sales letters, website design, or ad campaigns have been perfected, competition have taken the concept and run away with it. They don’t spend the bulk of their time thinking, planning, and revising they take action. They are thrill seekers, but they have gone out of their way to calculate the risks involved. Founder of Feedburner.com Dick Costolo once said, “The key is to just get on the bike, and the key to getting on the bike is to stop thinking about ‘there are a bunch of reasons I might fall off’ and just hop on and peddle the damned thing. You can pick up a map, a tire pump, and better footwear along the way.” Serious Entrepreneurs do not need toilet paper. Why so?
