Known as the most expensive perfumes in the world, Jean Patou has left an indelible mark on the fragrance market with Joy Perfume. From his humble beginnings after World War I and the Wall Street Crash, he raised the bar of luxury in spite of difficult times and inspired the women of America with his Joy perfume. Although from French descent, he reveres his American clientele too well that he created a perfume that contains double of the required essential oils, thus doubling or even tripling the price of perfumes of his time. Without a hint of woodsy tones, Joy perfume focuses on the simplistic and yet luxurious of all fragrances. It takes ten thousand jasmine flowers and twenty eight dozens of May roses to create just 30mL of this sensational scent. Top notes include Bulgarian Rose, ylang-ylang and tuberose while the heart and base in created with jasmine and Grasse and May Rose. Truly an impeccable concoction of floral scents, it aims to put women status quo to a pedestal even in difficult times. The Joy perfume has since then, been the scales by which female floral fragrances are measured. Other perfumes followed Joy after its huge success. 1938 brought us Colony, with Henry Almeras as the nose behind this scent that is of Oriental group. The top notes are of pineapple and ylang-ylang with carnation, iris, vetiver, opoponax and iris at its heart. It is then laid in a foundation of leather and musk.
