I wonder how many times I’ve professed admiration for the Internet… if admiration, in fact, is the proper word to use in this case. “I love the Internet,” or, “Don’t you just love the Internet?” are both phrases I’ve used more than once. And I don’t throw around that word ‘love’ lightly. I once read that there are 22 kinds of ‘love’ in the Latin language. I wonder if one of them applies to my infatuation with the information super highway! I don’t let it keep me up nights, but here’s what I mean. The TV is usually on at my house as is the laptop computer. Our 5-year old is usually angling for permission to either watch cartoons or play computer games but we try to keep his technological diversions to a reasonable minimum. But if he has a question about something I’m not sure of it’s easy enough to walk over, punch a few buttons, make a few mouse clicks and find an answer. The Internet is unbelievably good at providing information about anything and everything. It’s also amazing to note the incredible growth of the Net. Just a few years ago a Web search might return a dozen or so replies. Today it’s more likely to bring thousands… sometimes millions. It must be tough being that millionth site on the search engine list! I don’t think most people get past the first couple pages when they’re conducting a query. I needed to get some full color brochure printing done for the business and made a few clicks to see what was available and to compare some prices. In the old days this would have meant going to a full-fledged printing operation to have the order fulfilled. Now it’s just a few clicks and you can be online in a live chat with the printing company representative who will walk you through the whole process. There’s no question that the Internet is awesome but do I really ‘love’ it? It’s not like a fine wine, a beautiful painting or an inspiring musical opus… it’s in a class of its own. I like it!
